Surrealist Sculpture: Surreal Worlds
Objective 1: You will design a surreal world inside a bell jar, based upon the ideas of the surrealist movement.
What is Surrealism?
What Does Surrealism Look Like Today?
Vocabulary:
Surrealism-- is a cultural movement that began in the early 1920s, and is best known for its visual artworks and writings. The aim was to "resolve the previously contradictory conditions of dream and reality". Artists painted unnerving, illogical scenes with photographic precision, created strange creatures from everyday objects and developed painting techniques that allowed the unconscious to express itself.
Avant-garde-- a group of people who develop new and often very surprising ideas in art, literature, etc

Process:
- Acquire a clear, uniform 2 liter plastic bottle. Remove the label, any residual glue, empty & rinse out the container.
- Carefully cut along the connecting seam on the bottom 1/4 of the bottle. Remove the bottom & save for later.
- Draw a line 1/2" high from the top of the cardboard tube you have been given. Carefully & evenly cut along this line to the depth of 2 plies of paper. This will allow your plastic top to fit snugly.
- Flip the cardboard tube upside down so that the smaller diameter is laying down on the tagboard. Trace carefully around and cut out the circle. Work toward your edges and conserve materials! Glue the circle to the smaller diameter surface of the tube. After this dries clean up any excess cardboard and/or glue with 120 grit sandpaper. Finish with 22o grit sandpaper.
- Fit the plastic bottle onto the cardboard base. The cap will be addressed as functional decoration that must correlate with your design concept. This will be dealt with at a later time. You now have a "bell jar" for displaying your surreal world.
- Begin building your surreal world based on your research and sketches. You may use any material except clay. All sculpting techniques you have learned previously may be used.
- Your surreal world must fit inside the bell jar. Keep this in mind as you make it. Also consider how your jar lid can be used as part of the surreal world itself.
Requirements:
- Pinterest research board: NAME_Surreal World(Class Period).
- 2-3 different ideas with sketches for your world.
- A "bell jar" made from a clear, uniform, 2 liter plastic bottle.
- Your world must fit inside the bell jar
- Your world must be an original concept. You may not borrow from pre-existing surrealist work or fantasy worlds.
- Excellent craftsmanship is expected
