What Does a Great Sketchbook Look Like?
As beginning art students many of you have are unfamiliar with the concept of a sketchbook. A sketchbook is like a writing journal in that you are recording your thoughts and analyzing them. A sketchbook adds visuals to your thoughts and ideas. Look at these examples of amazing sketchbooks!
Sketchbook Assignments
Sketchbook assignment are to be done in order. All assignments due every week on the first day of class. Work will be a zero after Wednesday! Sketchbooks will include warm-ups in addition to homework.
- Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. Classes are based on drawing from direct observation. Many students have years of experience drawing from photographs, and are quite accomplished at it. Nevertheless, this program follows the AP College Board Guidelines, and does not support working from copyrighted material.
- Each Homework assignment is worth two grades. One grade is a Homework Grade (due date) and a second grade is a Daily Grade (composition and content). Homework is an essential component of the grading process in discussing strength and growth in a student’s work.
Assignments
Due Aug. 26th: Bring in your student and class contract.
Due Aug. 30th: Write a one page (letter size) biography/autobiography about someone close to you. This will be used in your next drawing project.
Due Sept 5th: Write a one page autobiography or biography about someone important to you. Draw 3 portraits from different angles of the person that your biography/ autobiography is about.
Due Sept 13th: Watch video tutorial #30 5 Ways to See What You Draw & #12 about Value Scales and Blending. In your sketchbook follow along and duplicate the examples in the video. Write down any notes that are in the video.
Due Sept. 19th: Watch video tutorial How to Shade & #15 about Shading Local Values. In your sketchbook follow along and duplicate the examples in the video. Write down any notes that are in the video.
Due Sept 19th: Watch the tutorial on value & texture and cross-hatching & basic strokes. Complete the exercise examples with the artist.
Due Sept. 27th: Watch video tutorial #8 about Nine Ways to Shade an Egg & #32 about How to Create Realistic Textures. In your sketchbook follow along and duplicate the examples in the video. Write down any notes that are in the video.
Due Oct. 3rd: Watch the video tutorial Drawing shadows (& fruit) with Paolo Morrone. In your sketchbook follow along and duplicate the examples in the video.
Due Oct. 10th: Watch the videos and complete the drawing tutorials on Colored Pencil Basics.
Due Oct. 17th. Watch the videos and complete the drawing tutorials: A Blending Technique for Colored & Shading with Colored Pencils
Due Oct. 24th: Look at the still life works of the 19th century painter Cezanne. Compare and contrast his work with that of Juan Gris.
Due Dec. 7th: Look at the works of the Cubist artists Juan Gris, Georges Braque & Pablo Picasso. List the influences behind the Cubist movement; then compare and contrast these artist's works to those of Cezanne.
