Layered Space: Observational Contour Drawing
Due August 28th, 2015
Objective 1: Create a multi-layered, mixed media artwork incorporating observational contour lines.
Objective 2: Render the object you drew using contour lines with correct Scale, Proportion, Texture, Contrast and Value.
Vocabulary:
Line--connection of points that defines a space; varies in width, length, gesture, direction.
Contour Line-- a line that follows the surface and/ or perimeter of an object.
Cross Contour Line-- intersecting lines that "map" the surface of an object (e.g. a globe).
Repetition--an element that occurs over and over again in a composition (can be a pattern)
Pattern--a predictable, repeated design, image or shape
Value--lightness and darkness
Contrast--differences between elements in a composition (created through size, shape, value)
Positive Space--the object(s) in an image.
Negative Space--the empty space(s) around an object and any openings within an object.
Requirements:
• The entire surface must be covered with contour lines.
• Use of positive/negative space
• Work must focus on the use of line, shape, repetition, composition, texture, scale, proportion & contrast
•Self assessment
Materials:
Paper, tape, pencil, watercolor, colored & black markers

- Begin with contour line drawings of your object from multiple angles. Try turning your page around as you draw. Fill the page.
- Lay out a design with tape on top of your contour drawings and paint 1 layer of thinned gesso over the ENTIRE page.
- Add watercolor onto this layer. Feel free to experiment with mixing and working wet vs. dry.
- Repeat step 1.
- Tape off a geometric shape on the page no less than 6 inches by 6 inches and fill with gesso.
- Inside the shape you are to draw your object with a full value range (black to white with at least 3 different shades of grey in between).
