What Does a Great Sketchbook Look Like?
As art students many of you have are familiar with the concept of a sketchbook. But have you really explored the full potential of your sketchbook? A sketchbook is like a writing journal in that you are recording your thoughts and analyzing them. A sketchbook adds visuals to your thoughts and ideas. Look at these examples of amazing sketchbooks!
Sketchbook Assignments: Drawings are to be done in order. All assignments due on first day of every week. Work will be a 0 after Wednesday! Sketchbooks will include warm-ups in addition to homework.
Assignments
1. Bring in your student and class contract by Friday, August 26th.
2. Due Aug. 29th & 30th: Choose an animal to make 6 research sketches for reference. Your animal may be from direct observation, books or the Internet.
3. Due Sept. 6th: Watch the video about paper artists Hari & Deepti
Answer these questions:
The artists have a theme to the artwork, what is it?
How is this connected to their choice of materials?
Describe step by step how the artist makes her artwork.
6. Due Sept 8th: Create a Pinterest board about paper sculpture. Title your board: (Your Name) Light Box & class period. Choose a theme & draw 2 sketches based on your Pinterest board and from the book you chose. You will use these as reference for your sculpture. Use your sketches to develop your building style. Watch the light box making process video. Write down the steps you will need to go through to make your paper sculpture.
7.Due Sept. 12th: Bring a finished sketch of your book sculpture idea to class.
8. Due Sept 28th & 29th: Write a short story about your sculpture. 500 word minimum. Submit through Google Classroom.
9. Due Oct. 5th & 6th:
11. Oct. 26th & 27th: Have 3 drawings based on the works of Luis Jimenez & Frederick Remington.
12. Nov. 9th & 10th: Watch the tutorials:My 2nd Horse Sculpt-Part 1 & My 2nd Horse Sculpt-Part 2. Develop your design based on research of the works of Luis Jimenez & Frederick Remington. Your work does not have to be a horse. The process you will observe in the videos applies to any animal/ person that you will sculpt.
13.Dec. 14th & 15th: Watch the videos on Mishima & Sgraffito.
Answer these questions:

b.How is it similar to drawing?
c. What is the Sgraffito technique?
d. What printmaking technique is it similar to?
e. The artist Todd Baricklow has a common theme in all his work. What is this theme?

- Students are not allowed to work from published photographs or other copyrighted work. Classes are based on drawing from direct observation. Many students have years of experience drawing from photographs, and are quite accomplished at it. Nevertheless, this program follows the AP College Board Guidelines, and does not support working from copyrighted material.
- Each Homework assignment is worth two grades. One grade is a Homework Grade (due date) and a second grade is a Daily Grade (composition and content). Homework is an essential component of the grading process in discussing strength and growth in a student’s work
